Poker playing styles can be described as tight, loose, passive or aggressive. But have you ever wondered what behaviors qualify for each of these playing styles?
The terms 'tight' and 'loose' pertain to a player's manner in handling chips. So, a player who plays 'tight' will stay in the game when they get a strong poker hand because they don't want their chips to dwindle down. While a player who plays 'loose' tends to be more adventurous when it comes to betting by putting more chips in to see the game through.
The terms 'passive' and 'aggressive', on the other hand, pertain to a player's approach in relation to one's opponents. A passive player is predisposed to follow along with what other players have done. In contrast, an aggressive player likes to take the lead or to take command of betting rounds.
If we bring these behaviors together, we can get a more comprehensive description of poker playing styles. These combinations include 'tight-passive', 'tight-aggressive', 'loose-passive', and 'loose-aggressive' styles in playing poker.
Tight-passive players keep an eye out for their chips and follow other players' leads when they make bets. And when they have a strong hand, they will usually call rather than raise the bets and they wouldn't really think twice about folding at any point in a betting round.
Tight-aggressive players also watch their stack of chips but they are not afraid of making the first move in raising the stakes. And when they do make a raise, more often than not, they've got strong poker hands to back them up.
Loose-passive players are not so possessive of their chips but they do follow aggressive players' leads. They tend to stay longer with a hand but they occasionally make the first move to raise the bets.
Loose-aggressive players seem to throw caution in the wind when it comes to chip handling but don't mistake that for carelessness. They want to be the dominant player by raising bets a lot with plenty of bluffs in between.
We can see how poker playing styles can be characterized by behaviors concerning their approach to handling chips and how they play with their competitors. But keep in mind that being tight or loose and passive or aggressive are not exclusive to one player, all the time. Because when and where these behaviors are observed depend on each player's state of mind be it in a casino, a friend's house, or a poker room online.
